The Author

Here we are May 2020. If you are reading this in the future, this is the time of COVID-19. If you happen on this today (May 13th 2020), well you know what that means – lockdown, social distancing etc. etc. Of course we are all staying home and now that means more time online. I have been quite good at not spending too much time online, although now it’s time to get my act into gear – I’m getting my social media ducks into order! In reality that means more order to my posts and my presence (I hope!).

If you’d have asked me 30+ years ago, where would I be living when I turned 40, the most unlikely answer would have been Finland, or the Northern Hemisphere for that matter. Still here I am. I’m proud to say that I’ve lived in Finland for over 10 years now. I’m not so proud when I say that I still manage to butcher the Finnish language in one form or another every single day. Finns, however are very forgiving and even quite encouraging if you show even the slightest willingness to try and speak Finnish. So I persevere.

I have, however found my place, as they say. I can honestly say I love living here. I will never be a Finn, and unfortunately the longer I live away from Australia, and particularly Tasmania, the less Australian I feel. I’m no different to any of the thousands of people who migrate, immigrate every single day.

I like words and I like writing in English and talking in English. Plus I want to share the country I call home.

Basic details about me … in no particular order of importance: wife, mother, lover, daughter, friend, sister, aunt, cyclist, worker, reader, cook, chef, entrepreneur, crew member, cousin, Leo, grey haired, Australian and Finnish.

I’ll try to keep it interesting in the meantime!

Some Finnish phrasology to get you started:

Tasmanialainen: one who is native of Tasmania

Kanerva (the name I post under): The Finnish word for Heather (my real name)

    1. It’s a very interesting place MJ, there’s more than just Nokia and Angry Birds. I’m really enjoying sharing now and I have to wonder why I didn’t do this earlier. I think I just wasn’t at the right point in my life…

Thanks for following and please feel free to comment, I’m looking forward to hearing what others think.

  2. I’m a Limey that has lived in Canada for over 20 years. It’s not only the language thing, it’s a whole different culture. I still ‘feel’ British, and still a fish out of water there.

    1. The culture thing can sneak up on you sometimes. Glad to know there are others out there who are going through, have been through it. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. I know there are many people in Finland but I have a cyber friend, that has the same disease as me, that also lives there. The world is small on the internet 🙂

  4. Hi Heather, thank you for visiting my blog! I will keep an eye on yours – as a Dutch person in Australia (5 years now) I love reading about other immigrants.

    1. Hello Linda! Thanks also for stopping by here. I also like reading blogs by those living somewhere else. Sometimes our stories are the same, sometimes they are worlds apart. Cheers 🙂

  5. Well…I’ve only been in Finland for 2 years now…and am very slowly getting used to it…I am from another set of islands, Orkney isles…kind of sort of smaller than Tasmania somehow, but arrived here from Saudi Arabia, were I’d been for more than a decade, so some difference, and some similarities..

    1. Thanks for stopping by! Finland certainly takes some getting used to. Orkneys to Saudi Arabia, that would have been a contrast!

  6. Thanks for following I Do Not Despair. Just about to become an ex-pat again myself. The last time was 27 years ago and it was Australia. Don’t know if I’ll come back Belgian, but it makes for good blog material.

      1. I spent a year in Melbourne but I had a job that took me around most of the main cities.

Loved Tassie – several trips to Hobart and one driving trip through the centre with mates.

  8. Hello…

Here’s a little New Years message from Türkiye to say “thank you”. I appreciate your recent ‘follow’, knowing how many interesting and entertaining blogs there are out there.

Blogging since June 2013, my little corner of the world tries to offer an eclectic smattering of posts, from basic amateur photography, to sharing my travel adventures over the decades, as well as day to day happenings here on our fruit farm in southern Turkey. I also throw in a few of my observations on life and lighter-hearted stuff for good measure.

You are more than welcome to have a look around, stay a while and have a trawl through my small collection. There are plenty of categories within the drop-down menus to help in said digging process. Of course, if you have any comments, suggestions or concerns, feel free to let me know – I’m not easily offended 🙂

Hope you have a great day and even better 2015…
